That's funny, I was thinking about asking the same question myself. Here's what I've been thinking, though you might wait for other answers too…

Laptops are just as powerfull as desktops nowadays and have harddrives with just as much room. They take up less room, and are, of course, more portable. Why not get one over a desktop?

But it will feel kind of funny to not have a big hulking thing on my desk…

I tend to think of my laptop as a portable extension of my big computer, not as 'the main' computer. That is kind of silly of me though, because technology moves on and not having a big computer taking up so much space is a good thing.

However, with laptop computers being smaller and portable, they are more prone to loss, theft, and damage. If either of us use it as the main computer storing all our pictures and such, a good backup solution will be critical. We'll need to either manually back up to disks and keep them seperate from the laptop, or (better) have an automatic backup process either physically (some kind of hardware solution on location) or online (there are several services where we can upload things to their server nightly).

I think I've talked myself into a laptop! But I've got a few more months to think about it before I am ready to buy myself :)

Depends, a desktop will cost less, but will use more power, is not portable,and has to have a place to live.
A laptop will probably cost more, will use about a third of the electricity, and can go with you where ever you go.
A Desktop is easier to work on and add upgrades to. I know that this has not helped much but will give you some things to consider.
