Blogger.com is a useful free blogging site. You can add Adsense ads and they have a easy integration with Amazon.
Another site to create a free blog and have access to a bunch of nice social networking tools is this one: http://www.yousaytoo.com/JadeDragon/?13075 That is my referral link so if you join go ahead and friend me.
The downside of the free sites is you end up with a secondary domain address like http://JadeD.blogger.com or http://www.yousaytoo.com/JadeDragon/?13075 instead of a top level domain like my main blog http://innovativepassiveincome.com
If you want your own domain than get a host like bluehost and get your own domain name through them. This route has some cost but more flexibility.
If you are just starting out blogging you likely want to go with the free site. You can always migrate your blog later to its own site if you start to build traffic. Good luck with your blogging adventure.
