There are some good sites out there, like eharmony and match.com, but even with those, you have to be wary. People are not always as they appear (or act, or even who they say they are) online.

And be sure to read though the fine details of any dating sites you join, like how you cancel and who they are giving your info to (those long personality questionares are gold to advertisers). Sorry to get all geeky on you, but you have to consider these things.

I personally know of two women who married the men they found on line. They are still happily married.

In short, yes. From personal experience I can say that yes you can. But the thing is you seem like you're just hoping to try online dating and find that one special girl instantly.. but you need to realize that while there are lots of people online that are great, there are also lots of creeps. And finding that special girl can take a long time, you just have to give it time and don't expect too much, and maybe after hours upon hours of talking to lots of great people, and lots of not so great people, you'll find someone really special. I think it's possible, but online dating sites might not be the best way. Joining special interest groups will give you a better environment for finding people that you share common interests with, and is a better way to build a strong relationship.

Long term, if you want to stay together keep a strong relationship, then having shared interests is important. You're more likely to have that if you're friends first than if you met on a dating site where the ad said "Likes dogs and has a good sense of humour".
