I worked in pest control for over ten years in a major candy company. Our experience during the 1970′s and 1980′s is that they do not work. Set up to guard the entrance ways to various areas we found that standard live traps caught as many rodents in electronically protected areas as in unprotected areas. The best prevention is sealing every hole the size of a pencil or larger with stuff the mice wont gnaw–like #4 steel wool, for example.
