My grandchildren spilled a bottle of Wite-Out (Bic Correction fluid) on my hardwood floor and tried to clean it up with raqs before I found it a month later. What can I use to clean it up, short of sanding and refinishing this spot?

Yikes!

Ok, I've got a couple of things you might try for getting it off the hardwood floor.

First, try a putty knife, one of those plastic ones, and see if you can get under some of it and gently scrape it up off the floor. You will have to be careful not to damage the finish on the floor though. By unsuccessfully wiping it up with rags though, they may have spread it to thin to do that.

As for solvents to soften it up. Start with WD-40, spray some on, let it soak in for a little while, and wipe off or gently scrape off, carefully.

If you tested a spot with the WD-40 and that didn't work, try acetone (nail polish remover) or some mineral spirits.

With all of the solvents, try them in an inconspicuous place first (maybe a closet?) and make sure they don't damage the finish. Solvents can soften and damage the hardwood finish, so do test first please.
