Quality of meat means a lot, you can try to get a cheap steak but its risky. I usually get a NY strip or a ribye when I cook it at home, its a little more expensive but cheaper than the restaurants.

The best way I found to cook a steak is frying it with a little bit of butter (1 tbsp). If its 1 inch thick try 5 min on each side for a Medium steak. I always just use salt and pepper for seasoning. If its a good steak like a strip you dont need to marinate it. Mine comes out perfect each time.

I think alot of the steak houses also use a garlic butter after they flip them when grilling.
It's easy enough to make. Crushed fresh garlic blended with softened butter, roll in plastic to chill and slice the amount you need.
Also, let your steak set out to room temperature before cooking, it helps them cook better and more tender. I either grill over charcoal or broil my steaks in the oven. We like ribeye the best, a little fat around the edges gives them a nice flavor.
