According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the origin of 'liquorice' or 'licorice' is from the Old French word 'licoresse' which was in turn derived from the Ancient Greek word, glukurrhiza, meaning 'sweet root'. The liquorice plant is a legume (like peas and alfalfa) and the root is processed into a sweet syrup to make the candy by the same name.
