Do you mean like with cell phones?
Basically, the idea is a web or net of cell towers, each covering a certain area, spaced apart in a grid, allowing a traveler to travel through an area and always be within range of one of the towers. The tranmissions switch (usually seemlessly) from one tower to another, depending on whichever tower is closest or has the strongest signal.
